A Day at Falasarna Beach

Falasarna Beach is the best beach I've ever been to. It's family friendly, absolutely beautiful, and not too challenging to get to.

Cliffside: Drive to Falasarna

Located on the north western side of the island, past Kissamos, it's about a one hour drive from the old town of Chania. Once you arrive at Falasarna (as you get closer there are signs directing you to the main beach) you can park and make your way over to the beach. If you prefer, you can take the bus (1.5 hour ride) to the beach but you are then restricted to the bus schedule when enjoying your day. However, it's a great option if you would rather not drive yourself and don't want to spend too much money (tickets are about 8 euros per person). The views on the way down to the beach are spectacular as you are literally driving on the edge of a cliff. A little scary but I always tell myself that huge buses do it everyday!

Chairs & Food

It's best to arrive by 10am but definitely by 11 because the beach fills up quickly. In the main part of the beach where we sit, there are 5 rows of chairs with the cabanas and cushioned sunbeds towards the front ranging from 20 to 40 euros. The two back rows with basic beach lounge chairs are 10 to 15 euros for 2 sunbeds and one umbrella. If you sit in this section of the beach, you can order food from the restaurant behind you, directly from the chairs. It's not the best food you'll have during your trip but this way you can maximize your time on the beach. You can also take a break from the sun and sit at the restaurant or get an ice cream on your way out. If you prefer to sit at a more traditional taverna, there are some just a few minutes walking from the beach that overlook Falasarna. We've gotten food from both places and while the tavernas are decidedly tastier, I lean towards ordering food from our chairs, simply so we can spend more time at the beach.

Ocean or Pool?

While the beach gets pretty busy, I've never found the ocean to be so crowded that it's not enjoyable. We usually go further out than most people and there is never anybody around us. It feels like you are in a swimming pool because the water is crystal clear and you can see the bottom even when you're far out. There aren't a ton of fish in Falasarna but definitely bring goggles because there are always a few to follow! While there are some waves, they're not too big and they don't stir up the sand. The water is extremely cold but super refreshing if you've been sitting in the sun.

Wild Side

There is a water sports hut on the main beach. We have only been jet skiing at Falasarna, but you can also go tubing, stand-up paddle boarding, and more. Jet skiing is a bit pricey (at 50 euros for 15 minutes) but if you're craving some adventure I highly recommend. I went for the first time in the summer of 2019 and I always look forward to doing it again. Even though you are required to go far out to be away from the swimming area, the water is still a vibrant turquoise and if you slow down, it's pretty cool to just take a break and admire the ocean. Definitely a highlight of the summer.

This is my favorite beach in Greece because the water is stunning, the beach is big so it doesn't feel too packed, and it isn't too difficult to get to from Chania. It makes for an incredible beach day!
