As you saw on the "Eats" page, my family and I are pretty into finding the best food by trying lots of places. We've found our favorites and tend to frequent them quite often, but we are always open to trying new places. I've made it easy for you. Here is a compiled list of my top 5 restaurants in Chania. Some are quick and some are sit-down. Whatever the style, they're amazing. At the bottom you'll find some honorable mentions. Enjoy!

5. Ginger Concept

Ginger is a delicious spot to grab a bite if you want to take a break from traditional Greek cuisine and try a more modern place. We've only eaten there for breakfast and lunch but they also serve dinner. Located right across from Well of the Turk in the center of the Chania Old Town, Ginger has a stylish atmosphere and classic foods with a trendy twist such as the yogurt with honey, fruit, and granola and their waffles with Nutella and fresh fruit. They also have delicious salads like their Caesar salad. This restaurant is a bit more pricy, but a must-try if you are into brunch!

4. Manousakis Winery

While I can't speak to the wine, the food at the Manosaukis Winery is delicious. They serve traditional Cretan cuisine in smaller plates and everything we've had has been fantastic. My favorites are the Cretan salad, meatballs, and fried potatoes. The setting is lovely and while it's about a thirty minute drive from the Chania Old Town (best to take a taxi), it makes for a nice break from the city and it is cool to see a different part of Chania. The owners and staff are super friendly as well!

3. Laganon Fresh Pasta

I LOVE Laganon Pasta. We discovered this restaurant in 2019 and I probably got pasta from there ten times in the summer of 2020. Their pasta is made fresh daily and the sauce is cooked directly in front of you after you order. It's ready in under ten minutes and you can get it for take-away or eat it at the restaurant. Each pasta ranges from four to ten euros and you can pay 0.50 for parmesan (I always get parmesan). My two favorite pastas are the bolognese with tagliatelle and the arrabiata with pappardelle. This is a great option if you are not looking to spend too much money, are a pasta lover, or want a quick dinner.

2. Well of the Turk

Well of the Turk is a beautiful family owned restaurant in the heart of the Old Town of Chania. The atmosphere is lovely, with vibrant bougainvillea draping over the courtyard where the tables are located. The food is absolutely amazing, and if you have a chance, walk by the restaurant between 11am and 3pm to take in the aromas of the food cooking. When eating here, I would recommend going at 8:30pm or 9pm because they rarely have any free tables after that. My favorite things to order are the hummus, Arab bread with hot red pepper, and the shish kabobs. At this point, we've had most of the menu and there's never been a dish we haven't liked so anything you order is probably going to be delicious.

1. Throumbi

Throumbi is a must-try if you are a meat lover. My family probably eats there twice a week because we love it so much. This restaurant is super popular and gets incredibly busy after about 8:30 pm so I would make a reservation for the night you plan to eat there. The street it's located on, back behind the harbor in the Old Town, is a must-see at night because it gets packed. Our favorites from Throumbi are the Caesar salad, smoked pork apaki, fried potatoes, saganaki, beef steak, and chicken souvlaki. After your meal, they bring you delicious balls of vanilla ice cream coated in a chocolatey dough. Even though Throumbi is not a traditional Greek taverna, their food is Mediterranean cuisine with a modern twist. Whenever you're in Chania, you have to give Throumbi a try!
