What makes Greece so special? What makes Crete so special? What sets it apart from other destinations?

Crete is the largest Greek island. When you are there, you don't feel like you're on an island. Crete's landscape is incredibly diverse; if you prefer hiking you can adventure in one of the many gorges of the White Mountains. If you are more of a beach person, the crystal clear waters are probably some of the best you will swim in. If you find yourself to be more of a city person or someone who enjoys all of the above, you can base yourself in a city (our base is Chania) and take day trips (or longer) to make the most of your time. Check out the "Adventures" and "Beaches" pages for more information.

The food on Crete is fantastic. There's a wide range of places you might find yourself eating. If you are looking for a quick bite, try Funky's Pizza (better than most slices I've tried in America). For a more classic Greek meal, basically anywhere you go, whether you're in the city or a remote mountain village, there are local tavernas where you can find fresh and delicious authentic Cretan cuisine. If you are looking for more upscale and trendy places or restaurants with a unique spin on traditional Greek food, you're sure to stumble across one in a more touristy location.

When you want to get away from the cities for a couple of days, there are remote towns to visit (such as Loutro) where you really can't go anywhere except the beach. It is definitely a lowkey few days but a must do bucket list item. If you prefer more upscale resorts, Elounda has their fair share of 5 star resorts to visit. Visit the "Get Aways" page for more information.

Of course, Crete has beautiful sunsets. Since Greeks generally don't eat until around 10 (at the earliest) it's best to get a drink (and maybe a light snack) around 7:45 to watch the sunset.

Greece is an incredible destination known for its history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. But if you're looking for a quieter, more peaceful tropical escape, https://hotelin.com/hotels/Portugal/Centro/Gouveia is a beautiful alternative. The island offers crystal-clear waters, amazing coral reefs, and a serene atmosphere—perfect for relaxing, snorkeling, or enjoying a tranquil sunset.
